John also called Mark - You are Helpful to God. / Acts 12:12

Being ambitious is one of the important privileges for young people. 

If you observed a new movement like Jesus movement in the Jewish society, which was oppressed by the Roman Empire and overwhelmed by the strict legalism, and if you were young enough to devote yourself to a promising movement like Jesus movement, wouldn’t you join the movement? 

John Mark had no opportunity to join the movement of God’s Kingdom led by Jesus. However, he was a lucky man. After the crucifixion and resurrection of Jesus, the disciples of Jesus gathered in Jerusalem. And they kept praying. Do you remember where they were praying? It was the upper room of John Mark’s house. So, John Mark experienced the moment of Holy Spirit at the day of Pentecost. 

Can you imagine the moment? It was the moment of Holy Spirit, the moment of presence of God, and it was the initial point of a new family of God – the Church. 
From the experience, John Mark was confident that it was a totally new movement ordained by God. Then, he aspired to join the movement deeper and deeper. And finally, he took a great chance. 

Acts 13:5 says “When they [Barnabas and Saul] arrived at Salamis, they proclaimed the word of God in the Jewish synagogues. John – our character John Mark - was with them as their helper.” 

John Mark was filled with the confidence of God’s calling. 
He was excited by the new vision. 
He was sure that he would be a heroic figure in the new movement like Paul and Barnabas. 

When I was eighteen years old, I went to the Presbyterian Theological Seminary in Seoul, Korea. 
At that time, I had a big dream: I will be a great pastor, I will be a great preacher, and finally God will use me to lead big congregation to God the father, by using me – especially by using me. 
I can remember what kinds of books I read in the seminary. They were biographies of heroic pastors and heroic preachers. I enjoyed identifying them with myself. 
I was confident, I had no doubt, if I follow the vision of God and the calling of God, I would be a hero like Abraham or David in the Bible and like Billy Graham or David Cho among the contemporary preachers. 

But, you may know the final scene of John Mark’s trip with Paul and Barnabas. 

Acts 13:13 says “From Paphos, Paul and his companions sailed to Perga in Pamphylia, where John left them to return to Jerusalem.”(x2)  

Long time was not needed until Mark recognized the reality of mission - the reality of ministry. The ministry and the mission are not conducted in heaven. We do ministry and preach standing on the ground. Our ministry absolutely includes some honorable factors like proclaiming the gospel as a messenger of God, observing the presence of God, and listening to the confession of somebody who met God through our ministry. 
However, Mark John also was required to travel long distance by foot. He was required adapt himself to exotic atmosphere, and he was required to confront the antagonists who oppressed him. It is the aspects of our ministry. 

When I was a seminary student, I studied theology very hard. I am serious. I studied literally hard. I was a good student whether you believe or not. 
However, I did not need long time to recognize the fact that my theological knowledge cannot make me powerful preacher. I could discuss on trinity theologically and philosophically. And, it could give me A grade in seminary class, but it could not give my congregation any powerful message. 
I could find some points that seemed to be very important to me and to my congregation during reading the Bible. So I taught them and preached them with the confidence that my audience would also experience aha moment in their lives. But, it was just my dream not my reality. 
Do you know what the most tragic fact was to me? I could criticize the local church that I was involved and the pastors of the local church. But I had no ability to renovate the church and our ministry. 
My dream I dreamed when I went to the seminary was not a dream but an illusion. 

Acts 13:13 says “John left them to return to Jerusalem.”

However, brothers and sisters, who are called as pastors and preachers by God!! 

The story of John Mark does not stop at this moment. 

From his coming back to home, not a short time passed. 
And, Paul the apostle wrote a letter to Timothy. 
And, he mentioned about John Mark in the letter. 

2nd Timothy 4:11 says “Only Luke is with me. Get Mark and bring him with you, because he is helpful to me in my ministry.” 

Do you remember what role of John Mark was when he accompanied Paul and Barnabas? 
He was a helper. 
At the scene of his coming back to Jerusalem, he seemed to be an unsuccessful helper. 
However, Paul finally wrote about him “he is helpful to me.” 
“John Mark is useful in my ministry.” 

As a pastor, as a preacher, 
we may have a big dream to be used as a useful tool of God in God’s ministry. 
However, we are required to do ministry and preach standing on the ground. 
It is the reality of our ministry. 
So, we suffer our disability and our limitation. 
Sometimes, we are desperate because of our disability and our limitation. 

Nevertheless, Nevertheless! 
Although we cannot help weeping in the ground of our ministry, 
Our Lord Jesus Christ whisper to us, 
“You are helpful to me.” 
“You are useful in my ministry.” 

Most of us are not heroic figure in ministry. 

Nevertheless, Nevertheless! 
You are, We are helpful to God. 

Most of us seem not to be a powerful preacher like Martin Luther King or Billy Graham. 

Nevertheless, Nevertheless! 
You are, We are useful in God’s ministry.
